The town of Dourges is located in the north of France, in the mining region of Nord-Pas-de-Calais. Many of its inhabitants are Polish, being mostly descendants of emigrants from Greater Poland – once occupied by Germany, but also including some who came there from Westphalia.

In the Polish Church of St Stanislaus (consecrated by the Bishop of Poznań in 1927) there is a beautiful altar named “Nativity Shrine”. It’s an art décopiece by Jan Szczepkowski, an artist awarded the Grand Prix prize at the International Exhibition of Decorative Arts taking place in Paris in 1925.

In 2017, the post-war wooden pulpit of the church was subject to conservation.

The task was carried out with the support of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage’s funds granted to the Association of Academic Traditions (the Foundation’s partner) as part of the programme entitled “Protection of Cultural Heritage Abroad”.
