o projekcie

The mizar in Studzianka is one of the six Tatar cemeteries preserved in Poland. It was established as a result of Tatars settling locally, given the land by King Jan III Sobieski in 1679.

The mizar in question is the only such large site of burial of soldiers of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. The cemetery is the final resting place of e.g.:

General Józef Bielak(born 1741 in Lovchitse, died before 24 June 1794 in a military camp near Iwie) – a Tatar officer at the service of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, participant of the Seven Years’ War (1756–1763) serving in the royal regiment of Major General Czymbaj Murza Rudnicki, commander of the 4thAdvance Guard Regiment from 1764, member of the Bar Confederation in the period 1768–1772, participant of the 1792 war with Russia for the defence of the Constitution of 3 May 1791, corps commander in the Kościuszko Uprising in Lithuania in 1794, promoted to the rank of major general in 1772, owner of Koszoły, Kościeniewicze, and Wólka Kościeniewicka in the Biała Podlaska County (near Studzianka).

Major Jan Bielak (died 8 May 1791) – a Tatar officer at the service of the 4thAdvance Guard Regiment, promoted to the rank of chorąży[≈second lieutenant] in 1781 and to the rank of regiment quartermaster in 1785; became a major on 16 March 1791.

Major Samuel Józefowicz(died 10 September 1812)

Rotmistrz [≈cavalry captain] Abraham Azulewicz(died 1789)

Lieutenant Abraham Azulewicz(born around 1770, died 1852), serving in his father’s royal regiment renamed to the 6thAdvance Guard Regiment in 1792. Promoted to the rank of namiestnik[≈deputy commander] in 1788, and to the rank of chorąży[≈second lieutenant] on 1 March 1792. In 1794 he served as an adjutant to Hetman Szymon Kossakowski. After Eljasz Okmiński died, Azulewicz was temporarily entrusted with the function of imam (until the new imam was appointed).

Rotmistrz [≈cavalry captain] Mustafa Montusz(died 1794)

There are also grave markers of members of soldiers’ families in the cemetery.

The objective of the conservation works taking place in Studzianka is to preserve the existing graves: to restore them to their former appearance and to protect them against degradation. Thanks to the Foundation’s activity, the cemetery will regain its historic quality while retaining its authenticity and unique nature at the same time.

2018

In 2018, the undertaken conservation works included 90 grave markers. The works in question were performed by a stone conservation team managed by Piotr Owczarek, MSc, and supervised by AFA Professor Janusz Smaza, PhD.

The task was financed from the Minister of Culture and National Heritage’s funds granted as part of the programme entitled “Supporting the preservation of sites of remembrance and commemoration in the country”.

The project was implemented in collaboration with Stowarzyszenie Rozwoju Miejscowości Studzianka [Studzianka Development Association], the Provincial Heritage Monuments Protection Office in Lublin – Biała Podlaska Branch, the District Starosty in Biała Podlaska, and the Łomazy Commune Office.
