The former building complex of the St Lazarus hospital is found on the south-west slope of Kalicha Hora in Lviv. The hospital was built in 1618 on the initiative of the Confraternity of the Rosary at the Dominican Corpus Christi Church, and was the fourth hospital operating in Lviv. The original composition of the complex included a church and two hospital wings on its sides (built in the years 1634-1640).

The wall surrounding the site features an iron gate found on the side of Mykoly Kopernyka Street (former Sokolnicka Street), with a stone plaque above it, reading:

SPITAL  S ŁAZARZA / NA CHWAŁĘ P. BOGV Y NA PORATO /WANIE VBOGYH CHORYH OD BRACTWA / ROZANCA S. P. MARIEI IEST WYSTAWIONI.

On the sides of the plaque there are bas-reliefs featuring scenes happening during St Lazarus’ life and right after his death. The 17th-century bas-reliefs depict “Lazarus in front of a wealthy man’s home” and “Lazarus in the Bosom of Abraham”, with plaques with inscriptions next to them.

2017

In 2017, the Cultural Heritage Foundation organised a range of preservation activities aimed at conserving the bas-reliefs and inscription plaques found on the wall surrounding the building complex of the former hospital of St Lazarus.

The conservation works were carried out by a team managed by Anna Kudzia and supervised by Prof. Janusz Smaza.

The project was financed from the resources granted by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage as part of the programme entitled “Protection of Cultural Heritage Abroad”.
